Hamilton, the Tony and Grammy Award winning cultural phenomenon from the brain of Lin-Manuel Miranda is returning to Chicago in September of 2023 after more than three years away.
The smash-hit musical returns with a new home at the James M. Nederlander Theatre on September 13th (24 W. Randolph St.), per Broadway in Chicago. “We welcome “Hamilton” back to its Chicago home, thrilled to present the return of this brilliant award-winning modern Broadway classic,” said Lou Raizin, President of Broadway In Chicago. The production was a mainstay in Chicago for over three years until its final curtain on January 5th, 2020 at its then-home CIBC Theatre. The Nederlander is quite a step up in terms of capacity, with nearly 500 additional seats than its first edition in Chicago.
According to ABC7 Chicago, casting, performance schedule and individual ticket sales for Hamilton will be announced later this year. Hamilton first debuted in New York in 2015 and is based on the 2004 book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Lin-Manuel Miranda has described the production as “America then, as told by America now.”
It’s time to expose myself as one of those shmucks who never got around to seeing Hamilton during its first stint in Chicago, nor have I had the pleasure of seeing a show in Broadway either. So the return of Hamilton, in any capacity, is exciting news. Especially as it’s announced that it’ll be coming to a more spacious and intriguing venue like the Nederlander. I mean, who doesn’t want to crush some shopping at Block Thirty Seven and then catch the greatest musical production of our time right after.
