Chicago Blackhawks at Buffalo Sabres | Saturday, October 3, 2026 | 5:00 PM CT | KeyBank Center, Buffalo, New York | CHSN/ESPN+/WGN-720 AM

I won’t lie, this one stings a little more than a normal early-season game. We’re 0-2 to start the year after getting shut out 6-0 in Utah on Thursday, and now we’re heading into Buffalo — Patrick Kane’s hometown — for a game with a storyline most Blackhawks fans didn’t even know was in play until recently. Kane strongly considered signing with the Sabres this summer before coming back to Chicago, and tonight he plays his first game in that building since making that choice.

Let’s get into the storylines, the injuries, and what Chicago actually needs to fix after one of the uglier losses of the young season.

Patrick Kane’s Buffalo Homecoming, With a Twist

Kane is a Buffalo native, and by his own admission, the choice this summer genuinely came down to Chicago or his hometown Sabres. “It was pretty much down to Chicago and Buffalo,” he said. “For the last little bit, I felt like the decision was going to be coming back to Chicago.” Buffalo simply didn’t have the roster flexibility to match what Chicago offered — they had 16 forwards competing for 13 active spots — so a sentimental homecoming lost out to a clearer role and a two-year, $8 million-a-year deal in Chicago.

Kane has history in this building regardless: 17 points in 16 career visits to KeyBank Center. I don’t put much stock in revenge-game narratives changing how a 37-year-old approaches a random October game, but I do think Kane plays with an edge in front of family and hometown fans, and this Blackhawks team needs every bit of his offensive instincts right now given how little scoring support he’s gotten through two games.

Two More Former Sabres Are Also Facing Their Old Team

Kane isn’t the only storyline here. Forward Jordan Greenway and defenseman Bowen Byram both face Buffalo for the first time since Chicago acquired them from the Sabres on June 23 of this year. Both players know this room, this coaching staff, and these tendencies intimately, which could matter on a Blackhawks roster that’s clearly still finding its identity under a new system. Greenway in particular has been one of Chicago’s few bright spots so far, scoring the lone goal in the season-opening loss to Vegas.

What Actually Went Wrong Against Utah

I have to be honest about Thursday’s game: it wasn’t competitive. Utah scored six unanswered goals, with Dylan Guenther netting two power-play goals and Clayton Keller setting up both. Fourteen different Mammoth skaters recorded at least a point, which tells you this wasn’t one hot line carrying the game — it was a complete, up-and-down dismantling. Arvid Soderblom made 26 saves and wasn’t really the problem; the structure in front of him was. Jeff Blashill said it plainly afterward: “I thought we made our decisions too slow. It was a fast game out there.”

The one number I’ll hang onto: Chicago has posted back-to-back double-digit shot-blocking games to start the year, with Wyatt Kaiser leading the team at four blocks through two contests. The compete level on the defensive end hasn’t been the issue — the decision-making and transition speed have been. If Chicago wants a different result tonight, that’s the specific thing that has to improve, not just “playing harder.”

Buffalo Is Banged Up Too, Which Helps Chicago’s Case

This isn’t a case of Chicago walking into a fully healthy buzzsaw. Buffalo is already missing winger Jason Zucker (abdominal injury, on IR), defenseman Conor Timmins (lower body, no clear return timeline) and backup goaltender Alex Lyon (upper body). Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is handling the net as the clear starter, and he was solid enough in the opener, stopping 17 of 20 shots in a 6-3 loss to Columbus where Buffalo’s own defense struggled as much as Chicago’s did on Thursday.

Buffalo’s scoring in that opener came from Mattias Samuelsson, Jack Quinn and rookie Konsta Helenius — none of them Buffalo’s big offensive names like Tage Thompson, who didn’t find the scoresheet in Game 1. If Thompson is still searching for his timing to open the season, that’s a real opening for Chicago’s penalty kill and team defense to keep this game closer than the odds suggest.

The History Favors Chicago, For What It’s Worth

Chicago has actually owned this matchup recently, going 15-8-2 against Buffalo over the last 25 meetings, and Teuvo Teravainen has been quietly excellent against the Sabres specifically — 23 points in his last 20 games against this franchise. None of that matters if Chicago’s transition defense looks like it did on Thursday, but it’s a reminder that this matchup has generally favored the Blackhawks even in down years.

One more small note for the box score watchers: Arvid Soderblom needs just one more save to reach 3,000 career saves, every one of them recorded as a Blackhawk. Don’t be surprised if he gets the net tonight to reach that mark in front of Kane’s hometown crowd.

What Actually Decides Tonight

Three things I’m watching: whether Chicago’s defensemen make faster first-pass decisions out of their own zone than they did against Utah, whether Kane and Greenway can generate real offense against their former team, and whether Buffalo’s missing pieces (Zucker, Timmins) open up matchup advantages Chicago can exploit on the power play. Buffalo is favored, and rightly so given Chicago’s performance Thursday, but this is a more beatable Sabres team than the moneyline suggests, missing real contributors and still finding their own footing after an opening-night loss.

My Final Score Prediction: Chicago Blackhawks 3, Buffalo Sabres 2
