Jail and Bail 2013 at the Airport Sheraton Griffin and I-95
June 18-21
LONGTIME ACS VOLUNTEER DAVID SINGER AND FORMER GOVERNOR CHARLIE CRIST KICK OFF YEAR OF JAIL AND BAIL
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Renowned Hollywood attorney & philanthropist, David W. Singer, continues, again this year, his lifelong commitment to the American Cancer Society. Singer once again is chairing Jail and Bail, the remarkable fundraiser that has raised close to $3.0 million in the past 22 years. This year, excitement is high as former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, has agreed to be the Honorary Chair. Singer and the Governor will host the organizational luncheon that forms a committee to plan this year’s event.
The luncheon will be held April 23 in the Ballroom at the Airport Sheraton in Fort Lauderdale. The worthy cause and the powerful participants is more than enough to entice professionals, local politicians, and business leaders from across South Florida to donate their time to this wonderful fundraiser. The Sponsors include County Line Chiropractic, BrandsMart and Lipton Toyota.
“We are excited to have former Governor Charlie Crist as our Honorary Chair,” said Singer. “He is a man of great vision and dedication and with him on board, we know Jail and Bail will be a tremendous success. Governor Crist has a long history on cancer issues. As Governor, he signed bills that made Florida a partner in in the life-saving Esther King Biomedical Research and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research programs. Also, he signed a dollar-fee-per-pack of cigarettes law that has kept over 500,000 young people from starting to smoke.”
Singer has chaired Jail and Bail for more than 22 years. The event has developed its own unique mechanism for raising money, while the participants have a great time doing it. Singer picks people to form his “parole board”. They, in turn, with some instruction, are taught how to find “jail birds.” Volunteers on the “parole board” may have their worst enemy or best friend arrested and thrown in jail for this good cause. It is the “jailbirds” who make the calls from jail to get ACS pledges. If they meet their bail, they get out. Many are having such a blast, they don’t want to go! This year, Singer has targeted a goal of $200,000.
Former Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti and State Attorney Mike Satz have become staples of Jail and Bail, and once again will participate in the excitement, involving the resources of all their great contacts. Lamberti, a cancer survivor, has been an important part of the event for the past six years, having served as the Honorary Chair in the past. Satz, also a former Honorary Chair, has been an irreplaceable part of Jail and Bail for the past 12 years.
“We are eager to get started. There is a lot of money to raise this year,” said Singer. “It will be gratifying to those people who sign up to help. Al Lamberti and Mike Satz are invaluable at this event, which continues to grow each year. Governor Crist will be a huge help. He is truly one-of-a-kind, and it is great that he is lending his name to this important cause.”
Singer is an active community leader and has participated in various charities. He is a past chairman of the American Cancer Society Board of Directors. He is a founding member of the Hollywood Professional Lions Club and served 20 years on the board of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. He also sits on the Board of the Hollywood Art and Culture Museum as well as serving as vice chair of the NSU Law Board of Governors. He has won many awards including Soref JCC Humanitarian of the Year and the NSU Celebration of Excellence Award. Most recently, he has joined Nova Southeastern University’s Ambassadors Board.
