The Chicago White Sox (63–99 last year) face the Sacramento Athletics (59–103) in one of our final spring training games, and this is our third matchup with them. We lost 99 games. They lost 103—worst in baseball. Both teams are rebuilding disasters, but at least we’re not the absolute worst.

The Athletics—now in Sacramento after leaving Oakland—have Mason Miller throwing 102 mph and Zack Gelof trying to establish himself. We have Colson Montgomery trying to become our franchise cornerstone and Drew Thorpe trying to earn a rotation spot.

Both teams are terrible. Both are years away from competing. And Opening Day is almost here.

For White Sox fans, this is one of our final spring evaluations against a team that’s somehow even worse than we are.

Where the White Sox Stand With Opening Day Approaching

2025 Record: 63–99

Ninety-nine losses. We’re rebuilding, and it’s going to take years. Colson Montgomery is supposed to save us. Drew Thorpe is supposed to anchor the rotation. Luis Robert Jr. is supposed to stay healthy.

Key Players:

  • Luis Robert Jr. (CF): Elite talent when healthy—just needs to be healthy
  • Colson Montgomery (SS): Our top prospect, the entire rebuild depends on him
  • Erick Fedde (SP): Veteran arm who mentors young pitchers

Top Prospects:

  • Bryan Ramos (3B): Power bat trying to prove he’s ready
  • Drew Thorpe (RHP): Gets another start against the A’s
  • Edgar Quero (C): Young catcher with offensive upside

Drew Thorpe gets another chance against Sacramento. We’ve faced them twice already this spring. Can he finish strong?

The Sacramento Athletics: Starting Over in a New City

2025 Record: 59–103 (Last Season in Oakland)

The Athletics lost 103 games—worst in baseball. They moved from Oakland to Sacramento. They’re rebuilding, hoping prospects develop, and trying to establish an identity in a new city.

Key Players:

  • Zack Gelof (INF/OF): Versatile player with offensive potential
  • Shea Langeliers (C): Defensive-minded catcher providing leadership
  • Mason Miller (RHP): Throws 102 mph with elite strikeout stuff

Top Prospects:

  • Tyler Soderstrom (C/1B): Bat-first prospect with power
  • Darell Hernaiz (INF): Young infielder still developing
  • Luis Morales (RHP): Pitching prospect in the system

The Athletics are the only team worse than us. We’ve played them three times this spring—this is our final matchup before Opening Day.

The Matchups That Matter Today

Position White Sox Athletics
Shortstop Colson Montgomery Darell Hernaiz
Center Field Luis Robert Jr. Zack Gelof
Starting Pitcher Drew Thorpe Mason Miller

Colson Montgomery vs Darell Hernaiz at Shortstop
Montgomery is our top prospect with higher upside. Hernaiz is still developing. Montgomery should dominate this matchup for the third time.

Luis Robert Jr. vs Zack Gelof
When healthy, Robert has way more talent. Gelof is versatile and productive for what the A’s have. Robert should dominate if he’s on the field.

Drew Thorpe vs Mason Miller on the Mound
Both throw hard with strikeout stuff. Miller has more raw velocity (102 mph). Thorpe has better command. Third matchup between these teams this spring.

What the White Sox Need to See Today

Drew Thorpe Finishes Spring Strong
Third matchup with the A’s. Thorpe should dominate the worst team in baseball. Three or four quality innings sends him into Opening Day with confidence.

Colson Montgomery Ends Spring Hot
Final spring game against weaker competition. Montgomery should finish strong and head into the regular season with momentum.

Luis Robert Jr. Stays Healthy
Opening Day is days away. Just get through the game without injury. Stay on the field.

Bryan Ramos Shows He’s Ready
Against the A’s weak pitching, show the power and bat-to-ball skills. Final audition before Opening Day.

Finish Spring Training With a Win
The Athletics lost 103 games. We should beat them. End spring on a high note before Opening Day.

What Sacramento Will Bring

Mason Miller will pump 102 mph fastballs. Zack Gelof might get his hits. But the Athletics are the worst team in baseball, and it’ll show.

They’re rebuilding in a new city. We’re rebuilding on the South Side. Both teams are hoping prospects save them.

White Sox Fan Prediction: We Should Win This

Final Score: White Sox 5, Athletics 3

Drew Thorpe throws four solid innings in his final spring start, showing he’s ready for Opening Day. Mason Miller shows flashes of his 102 mph heat but gives up three runs.

Colson Montgomery goes 2-for-3 and finishes spring strong. Luis Robert Jr. crushes a solo homer (then exits as a precaution, naturally).

The Athletics show some fight—Tyler Soderstrom launches one—but we’re the better bad team, and it shows.

Two-run win to end spring training. We’ll take it heading into Opening Day.

Why This Game Matters

It’s one of our final spring games. Opening Day is days away. And we need to finish strong against the worst team in baseball.

Can Drew Thorpe end spring on a high note? Will Colson Montgomery finish hot? Can Luis Robert Jr. stay healthy heading into the season?

The Athletics are the only team worse than us. Beating them builds confidence heading into Opening Day.

Spring training is almost over. The real games are about to start. And we need our young core to be ready.

Go Sox!!! Finish spring strong and get ready for Opening Day.
