Deerfield Beach, FL – Sunny skies tried to beat out the windy am as a gnarly set of chest high waves pounded onto Deerfield beach testing the Roxy Fitness Competitors in the first heat of SUP competition. The first and second heat of women SUP competitor’s battled there way out past the first break. Over the tops of waves, and once up to standing, a mile around 2 buoys and back. Top winners in both heats under 14:00.
412 women competed in the Roxy Fitness Event sponsored by locally loved Island Water Sports (IWS) as well as Kind bars, Core water, Kombucha and Sun Bum all happened right here locally on Deerfield Beach last Saturday am. A fun crowd of supporters cheered competitors into the surf and high-fived them coming back out. Roxy has always been know to be where there is surf, healthy living and having fun. Roxy has set out to combine all three elements and with the global reach of the #ROXYFITNESS tour, they have engaged their following to celebrate living and active outdoor lifestyle. Roxy challenges this community to try new things and have fun along the way. The title sponsors of this event IThe 3 part event held on Deerfield Beach, FL did just that! The event included a 1K stand-up paddle boarding race (SUP), 5K run on the sand, and a 60 minute yoga on the sand with certified yoga instructor Amanda Mestre, from Miami. The beach event started at 8:15 with planned activities ending at noon.
I spoke with Roxy Rep Yvonne Clements regarding the event in Deerfield, “Deerfield is such a amazing and close community where everyone knows everyone. Love that. Especially the amazing IWS crew and family.” She goes on to say, ” Roxy was proud to support the community and bring all these strong girls together.” You could certainly see the team work of locals favorite surf shop and all things ocean sports, IWS worked seamlessly with Roxy by providing safety to the competitors, keeping the event running on time, and making sure all had what they needed to put together a fun community event that I know we would love to see more of in this area!
The area along the pier is where you can always find locals and those alike enjoying the beach and local flavor. Local influencer in the SUP world is fire fighter and home town favorite Victoria Burgess. She was in the waves Saturday am but did not officially compete. Victoria’s bio reads like a champion, “I have lived most of my life in South Florida. My life has always revolved around being active, healthy, fit and into many sports. I started surfing when I was 19 years old on a long board and haven’t stopped since. Living in Florida it can often be flat, so I caved into the SUP world in late 2013 and have been SUP surfing and racing ever since. I have had some amazing experiences around the world, most recently competing in the M2O in 2016- an experience I will never forget.” It is local support from competitors like this that offer their experience by being in the community that help to grow this type of sport. Roxy is a sponsor of Victoria’s and all loved having her in the mix.
