Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons | Week 6 | Sunday, October 18, 2026 | 12:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM ET | Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta | FOX (Kevin Burkhardt, Tom Brady)

Last week I picked the Bears to beat the Packers, 24-20. We lost 31-7. Tyson Bagent went 12-of-21 for 87 yards with two interceptions, Ben Johnson pulled him in the fourth quarter, and Case Keenum threw a fourth-and-goal interception in the end zone and then lost a fumble. It was the first game since the death of Mike Ditka, and the Bears wore a No. 89 decal in his honor. The game was not worthy of the occasion.

Now we’re 3-2 and it looks like Caleb Williams is back. That changes the whole afternoon.

Caleb Williams Is Back, With Caveats

Williams tore his right hamstring in the Week 2 loss to Minnesota on Sept. 20 and has missed three games. He was a full participant in practice this week and was listed as questionable on Friday. ESPN and NFL Network reported Saturday that he is expected to start. I’d watch the inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff.

In two games this season, Williams was 36-of-55 for 407 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, plus 107 rushing yards and two rushing scores. He said “I trust myself” about the hamstring, and he had never missed a snap to injury before this.

The Bears went 2-1 without him. Keenum won in Week 3 against the Eagles and Bagent won in Week 4 against the Jets, but the Packers game showed what a backup-led offense can’t do. This week also marks the first NFL meeting between Williams (the No. 1 pick in 2024) and Michael Penix Jr. (No. 8).

The Bears’ Injury Report Is Ugly on Defense

  • Out: RB Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe), DE Dayo Odeyingbo (quadriceps), LB T.J. Edwards (hamstring), LB Keyshaun Elliott (quadriceps).
  • Questionable: Williams, CB Tyrique Stevenson (hip, limited all week) and CB Kyler Gordon (calf), who was activated from PUP and was a full participant.
  • Suspended: Montez Sweat is suspended by the NFL for two games.
  • Possible returns: Shemar Turner (activated from PUP Tuesday, first game since tearing his ACL) and offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo, who Johnson said has a chance to be active.

That is a lot of missing front-seven talent. With Monangai out, D’Andre Swift is the lead back, and he fumbled twice earlier this season. Ball security matters again.

The Falcons: Bijan Robinson and a Bend-Don’t-Break Defense

Atlanta is 2-3 after a Week 5 overtime loss to Baltimore. Michael Penix Jr. hurt his ribs in that game but was a full participant on Friday, and the Falcons’ coach has said he will start barring a setback. Atlanta is 2-1 in Penix’s starts.

  • Bijan Robinson has 732 scrimmage yards, second in the NFL, and five touchdowns. He’s a runner and a receiver, and this is the matchup the Bears’ thin front seven worries me about most.
  • The defense is run by Jeff Ulbrich and pressures with numbers. Atlanta had four sacks against Baltimore, with 11 different defenders recording a pressure.
  • The secondary is without C.J. Henderson (groin, out) and A.J. Terrell, who is on injured reserve. Za’Darius Smith is questionable with a neck injury. Drake London (hip) and left tackle Jake Matthews (groin) were limited in practice on Friday.

The Matchups I’m Watching

Williams against Atlanta’s short-handed secondary. The Falcons are missing two of their top corners. Colston Loveland and the receivers should have chances if Williams gets time.

Bears pass protection against Atlanta’s pressure. Ulbrich sends rushers from a lot of places, and Williams is coming back from a hamstring injury. Escaping the pocket is part of his game, but the Bears need him to get rid of the ball on time.

Robinson against the Bears’ linebackers. With Edwards and Elliott out, Chicago will be thin in the middle. If Robinson gets to the second level, the game gets long.

Turnovers. The Bears lost the turnover battle last week in the worst way. Swift’s fumbles and any rust from Williams could hand this game to Atlanta.

Penix’s ribs. If he is limited, Atlanta leans harder on Robinson, which plays into the Bears’ weakest area.

What Actually Decides Sunday

It comes down to whether the Bears’ offense, which hasn’t looked like itself without Williams, returns to form, and whether the defense can survive without Sweat, Odeyingbo, Edwards and Elliott. I like Chicago’s passing game against this secondary more than I like its run defense against Bijan.

This isn’t a pick I’m confident in after last Sunday. The market says it’s a coin flip, and I agree. I’ll take the Bears in a shootout, mainly because I trust a healthy quarterback over a rib-injured one and because Atlanta’s secondary is hurt.

My Final Score Prediction: Chicago Bears 27, Atlanta Falcons 24

We can do it!!!
