Yankees Visit the South Side Saturday Night
The New York Yankees come to Rate Field Saturday night, and look, we know what we’re up against. At 75-60, they’re one of the best teams in baseball while we’re sitting at 48-87. But it’s Saturday night on the South Side, Shane Smith has been throwing well for us, and sometimes you just catch a team napping. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.
Game Info
When: Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 7:10 p.m. ET
Where: Rate Field, Chicago
TV: CHSN, YES
Pitchers: Cam Schlittler (2-2, 2.76 ERA) vs Shane Smith (4-7, 3.83 ERA)
Why We’re Not Completely Dead
Shane Smith gets the ball for us, and he’s been one of our more reliable guys with a 3.83 ERA. Yeah, he’s 4-7, but that’s more about run support than his pitching. Smith’s been attacking the zone and getting first-pitch strikes, which is exactly what you need against a lineup like New York’s.
The Yankees are going with Cam Schlittler, who’s been solid at 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA. He gets a lot of ground balls, which could work in our favor if we can put some pressure on their defense.
The Betting Reality
Vegas doesn’t think much of our chances – we’re getting +182 as home dogs while the Yankees are heavy favorites at -222. They’re also laying 1.5 runs. The over/under sits at 8.5, and honestly, that might be generous considering how much we’ve struggled to score.
The numbers say the Yankees have about a 69% chance to win, and frankly, that sounds about right. We’re just 47-133 as underdogs this year, which pretty much tells the whole story of our season.
Offensive Matchup
Aaron Judge is having another ridiculous year, leading the Yankees in everything that matters. The guy’s a machine, and we’ll probably have to pitch around him most of the night. Cody Bellinger can hurt you too, so our pitchers better locate their fastballs.
For us, Lenyn Sosa has been our most consistent hitter with 17 homers and 60 RBIs while hitting .270. Andrew Benintendi has been swinging the bat better lately with a hitting streak going. We need these guys to step up in a big way.
The South Side Reality
We’re not fooling ourselves here. This Yankees team leads baseball in runs and home runs, and we’re near the bottom in both categories. They’ve won 6 of their last 8 when favored, while we’ve won just 3 of our last 10 as dogs.
But you know what? It’s Saturday night at Rate Field, and crazier things have happened. One projection has them winning just 5-4, which would honestly feel like a victory for us at this point.
White Sox Fan Hope
Look, we’ve sat through enough beatings this year that we’ve earned the right to dream a little. Smith’s been throwing strikes, our young guys are still developing, and maybe – just maybe – we catch the Yankees looking ahead to their next series.
At 48-87, every competitive game feels like a small win. If we can make this interesting and show some fight against one of the best teams in baseball, that’s something to build on.
We’re not asking for miracles. Just give us a game worth watching and maybe a reason to cheer in the late innings.
Come on, South Side. Let’s show these Yankees we’re not rolling over.
