1- CMCCKK-RKQPerusing through Facebook a few months ago, I was intrigued by Broward 100‘s contest to select ice cream flavors that would make up Broward County’s official  “Scoop of the Century”. I grabbed my iPad and started writing down tropical flavor combinations to inspire me. Immediately these popped into my head: Coconut, Banana, Orange, Mango with favorites Coffee and of course Chocolate. Next I went to the Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor website to see the latest flavors.  I knocked out orange and mango, as those delicious fruits are not appealing to everyone.  A tasting was in order, so I stopped by Jaxson’s to sample Death By Chocolate, Coffee and Tropical Coconut. That is how I created my entry. Then I totally forgot about it.

They proclaim more than 200 flavor ideas were submitted for the “Flavor of Broward.” The promotion is part of Broward County’s year long celebration of its centennial – Broward 100: Celebrating the Art of Community.  The final flavor — caramel, mocha, coconut and crackle (that hard shell chocolate we all loved to dip our vanilla cones into as kids) — is a collaboration of my idea with Jaxsons’ owner Linda Udell Zakheim and General Manager Jerry Smith’s expertise. They wisely added caramel to the mix to balance the coffee and chocolate (mocha) and toasted coconut for the right amount of texture.

It was a challenge to sort through the entries, identify those that we thought would represent Broward and have mass appeal, make samples of the 10 most promising flavors, try them, tweak them and make them again, then decide on a winner,” said Smith. In the end, all 6 judges were unanimous in their decision. The prize you ask… Jaxson’s famous Kitchen Sink™ dessert for 4. Pretty cool, and I plan to invite my friends to join me next week to get a taste. Jaxson’s is located at 128 South Federal Highway, Dania Beach, stop by for a scoop. Who wants an adult version? My favorite bartenders Nick, Alex & Bill are on hand to help me concoct the perfect cocktail version for a nighttime treat. Cheers!
